Final Grades Posted

The grades for the final exam (and the final grades) are posted on Blackboard. I threw out 4 questions, so your points are calculated as number correct out of 46 questions, instead of 50. There were not many A's, but there were quite a few B's.

The final letter grades are also posted. I hope you all enjoyed the course, and wish you all the best for the holidays and for the future.

Study Tips For Final Exam

I thought I would share an approximate breakdown of the weight for each chapter on the final exam.

Chapter %
Ch13 15%
Ch14 15%
Ch15 15%
Ch16 20%
Ch17 10%
Ch18 25%

As I mentioned in class, you should definitely be able to use the various consumer compensatory and non-compensatory decision-making models. Use your handouts as a study guide, but definitely make sure you've read the chapters.

Good luck, and see you Wednesday at 1:30 in the regular classroom.

Project/Participation Grades Posted

Your project grades are now posted on Blackboard. I provided comments in the assignment tool for each group, but overall, I was pleased with your work.

You will also see your overall participation points. This rates how much you contributed to class discussions, etc.

If you want to see what you need to make on the final exam to make an A, B or C, just plug you points into this grade calculator (Excel format).

Student Evaluation of Teaching

As you probably know, this semester UNT has switched to an online system of student evaluations. I want to encourage all of you to take advantage of this opportunity to rate both my teaching and the course.

This is important because it (a) is how the university evaluates me as an instructor, and (b) helps me improve my teaching and the setup of the course. Answer honestly, and don't worry ... your ratings and comments will remain anonymous, and the results won't be released until after grades are assigned.

Take the survey here.

Handouts for Chapter 18 Posted

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, and has made some progress on the project, which of course is due next week.

The Chapter 18 handouts can be downloaded here.

Project Reminders

Remember, sometime before 5 p.m. tomorrow, each group is required to send a short paragraph describing their product for the project.

Also regarding the project, remember that the paper itself is due two weeks from today (December 9), so if you are just now thinking about your topic, you are behind schedule.

Extra Credit Opportunity

I have an extra credit opportunity for you, but you will need to act quickly. My colleague has a survey, and I will offer 5 points to your total if you take it, and you will also be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift certificate from Target ... but the deadline is noon on Friday, November 13.

The link is here.

Updated 11/16 10:35 a.m.: The deadline for extra credit has been extended to noon on Friday, November 20 (but you won't be entered for the gift card)

Exam II Grades Posted

The grades for Exam II are posted. There were three questions that were poorly written and just plain bad -- so I threw them out. I went ahead and eliminated another one just to be nice, so your points were calculated as the number correct out of 46, rather than 50. The grades overall were pretty good, with a class average of 78.

Grade distribution and statistics are below. Also, I added a column with your total points. There have been 265 total points available, so you can calculate your approximate letter grade by dividing your total points by 265. For example, if your total is 2225, then 225/265 = 85%, which would be a solid "B." (If your total is in parentheses, you haven't presented your group case yet, so you would divide by 215 instead of 265). There are still nearly half the points to go, so you can still raise your grade significantly if it's not where you want it to be, but I wanted to give you some sort of mid-term progress report.

Statistics:
MEAN 78
STDEV 12.36
MIN 43
MAX 100
MODE 80

Hints For Exam

I have written the exam, so I thought I would provide some additional information to aid with your studies. It will be similar in format to the previous exam, and again, you can use your handouts as a study guide, but the textbook will provide more detailed information.

The question breakdown will be approximately:

Chapter 8 (Perception): 15%
Chapter 9 (Learning, Memory): 20%
Chapter 10 (Motivation, Personality & Emotion): 35%
Chapter 11 (Attitudes): 15%
Chapter 12 (Self-Concept and Lifestyle): 15%

This is subject to change slightly, and is not exact, but it should help you focus your studies. Good luck.

Reminder - Exam Postponed Until Wed., Nov. 4

Just a reminder (or if you missed class last week) that the exam has been postponed until next week.

This week, we'll cover Chapter 12 and 13. (The slides should be posted tomorrow.) However, the exam will still only cover chapters 8-12, the same as originally planned.

Update 10/27 10:06 a.m.: I updated the syllabus with the revised class schedule.

Team Presentation Evaluations

I have posted the grades for the latest set of team presentations (from October 14). In addition, on the home page is now a folder titled "Team Presentation Evaluations" ... all groups who have presented should see their evaluation sheet.

If you are a member of a group that has presented and you don't see the grade in the grade book or the evaluation sheet, that means you haven't signed up for your group. Go to the group sign-up sheet and do so, and then you should see the grade sheet.

Also, I posted the extra credit points.

Here's your chance to earn 10 extra points toward your total. Just take a short survey ... should take 10-15 minutes. Be sure to enter your name and EUID (e.g. "abc0001", not your ID number).

The survey is here.

To earn the points, complete the survey before 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 9.

Exam I Grades Posted

The points for Exam I are posted on Blackboard. There were a few questions that a relatively large percentage of the class missed, so I calculated the points as the number of correct answers divided by 46.5.

With the curve, the statistics for the exam are:

Mean 79
StDev 12.74
Min 47
Max 105
Mode 82

The grade distribution is provided below. There were an equal number of A's and D's and F's, making it a pretty good normal distribution, although skewed slightly toward the higher end. This is about what you would expect from an exam.

Wednesday's Exam

As we discussed in class, Wednesday's exam will cover Chapters 1-7. There are no slides for Chapter 1, but there may be a few questions from the notes on the first day of class. (If you missed that class, you should get the notes from a team member or classmate).

The breakdown for the exam will probably be around 10% from chapter 1, 40% from Chapters 2-5 and 50% from Chapters 6-7.

I am putting a copy of an older edition of the textbook on reserve in the library, so if you don't have a textbook, you can check it out for two hours during library hours. I can't guarantee you won't miss anything with an older version, but it should be OK. (It should be available this evening.)

Use your PowerPoints as a study guide, but definitely look over the chapters in the book to understand the material in more detail.

We'll also have our first group presentation on Wednesday.

Chapter 2-5 Handouts Posted

The handouts for Wednesday's lecture (Chapters 2-5) is available for download here.

There are quite a few slides, but we won't go over them one by one. It's as much a study guide as anything else.

If you have any problem downloading, please email me. I was having some server issues, but I believe I fixed them. I have been able to download with no issues; for some reason the Powerpoint file seemed to be causing problems. That's why the handouts are in PDF.

Case Assignments

I have assigned the cases requested so far, and the list is below. I haven't gotten a request from Groups 6 and 9, so basically you can choose between the remaining cases (first-come, first-served):
  • Case 3-1 (Oct. 21)
  • Consumer Insight 16-1 (Nov. 18)
  • Consumer Insight 18-1 (Dec. 2)
Here are the case assignments:
  • Group #1: Case 3-7 (Yaris) (Oct. 7)
  • Group #2: Case 3-6 (Revlon For Men) (Oct. 21)
  • Group #3: Case 3-3 (Jack Links) (Oct. 14)
  • Group #4: Consumer Insight 8-1 (Sept. 30)
  • Group #5: Consumer Insight 8-2 (Sept. 30)
  • Group #6: TBD
  • Group #7: Case 2-7 (Mosquito Magnet) (Sept. 16)
  • Group #8: Case 3-2 (Levis) (Oct. 7)
  • Group #9: Consumer Insight 13-1 (Nov. 4) (Updated 9-30)
  • Group #10: Case 3-9 (Preventive Care) (Oct. 14)
It looks like everyone chose to present in September or October ... I hope I didn't scare you by saying that the grading would be more stringent in later cases. By early October, it will have pretty much leveled out.

Your Case Selection

As discussed in class, I have created a form that will allow you to rank your Top Five preferred cases. Just drag the cases to the order you prefer. It's sort of like a Netflix queue. Don't worry about ranking below the top five ... I will ignore everything below #5.

If there are ties, the time submitted is the tie-breaker. Remember, only one submission per group, please. If one group turns in multiple requests, I'll use the most recent one.

The form is available here.
